Flag of Barbados (GIF)

The national flag of Barbados is composed of vertical bands of ultramarine blue (hoist side), gold (center), and ultramarine blue (fly side). The blue bands represent the ocean and the sky, symbolizing the country's commitment to freedom and hope. The gold band reflects the sandy beaches of Barbados and the bright sunshine, evoking the warmth and optimism of the nation. At the center of the gold band is a black trident head, interpreted as representing the sea god Poseidon, highlighting Barbados' maritime heritage and its connection to the ocean. The trident symbol was taken from Barbados' colonial badge, where the trident of Poseidon is shown with Britannia holding it, underscoring the historical ties between Barbados and the British Empire. The broken lower part of the trident signifies a symbolic break from its status as a colony, representing independence, and the three points of the trident embody the three principles of democracy: government of the people, government for the people, and government by the people.

The coat of arms of Barbados features a helmet with a national symbol atop it, accompanied by a shield below, which is supported by two animals. The national symbol above the helmet depicts a Barbadian fist grasping two sugar canes crossed in the fashion of the Cross of Saint Andrew, highlighting the significance of the sugar industry and the country's celebration of independence on St. Andrew's Day. The shield, adorned in gold, showcases a pair of the national flower, the peacock flower, in the upper part and a single bearded fig tree in the lower part, symbolizing the island's natural wealth and indigenous flora. Supporting the shield are a dolphinfish and a pelican bird, representing the fishing industry and Pelican Island, respectively. Below the shield, a banner carries the nation's motto, "Pride and Industry," encapsulating the spirit of self-assurance and industriousness that defines the country.
