Flag of Louisiana (GIF)

The flag of Louisiana, commonly known as the Pelican flag, features a blue rectangular field with the seal of Louisiana, a white pelican vulning herself, prominently displayed at the center. Below the pelican, a white ribbon bears the state motto "Union, Justice, Confidence" in blue lettering. The symbolism of the pelican is rooted in medieval lore, where pelicans were thought to nourish their chicks by drawing their own blood to provide sustenance in times of scarcity. This image of the pelican in her piety came to represent the Passion of Jesus and the Eucharist. Additionally, the mother pelican's head and outspread wings, sheltering the three chicks beneath her, collectively form a stylized fleur-de-lis, another emblem with cultural significance in Louisiana. The flag encapsulates the state's values of unity, justice, and trust while connecting with historical and religious symbolism, contributing to its unique and meaningful design.
